Is Mobile Car Valeting Worth It?

For most drivers, mobile valeting is worth it when time is short, the car is used hard by children, dogs or work, or the car is about to be sold. You get a thorough clean without driving anywhere or giving up a weekend, and the work happens where the car is parked. It is less worth it if you enjoy washing the car yourself, have the space and kit to do it properly, and keep up with it. This guide sets out what you are paying for and how to weigh it up honestly.

What are you actually paying for?

The price of a mobile valet buys three things, and it helps to separate them:

• Labour and skill. A full valet takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours of focused work: deep vacuuming, wiping every interior surface and vent, glass inside and out, a two-bucket hand wash, wheels, tyres and a carnauba wax finish.
• Equipment and products. Commercial vacuums, a pressure washer, wheel cleaners, microfibre towels and the right chemicals for each surface. Buying a similar kit for home use costs real money and needs storing.
• Travel and supplies. We bring our own water and power and charge no call-out fee, so you need nothing except the keys.

When you compare prices, compare against all three. A cheap wash that skips the interior is not the same product.

How much time does it save?

Doing a full valet properly at home takes most people far longer than a professional, simply because they do it a few times a year rather than daily. Add the time spent buying products, setting up, and clearing away. If you instead drive to a hand car wash, there is the journey and the wait. With a mobile visit, the car is cleaned on your drive or at work while you carry on with your day. For anyone whose free time is limited, that is usually the deciding factor.

Does a professional clean make a difference to the car's value?

Cleaning does not change what is under the bonnet, but it changes how the car is judged. Autotrader's own research found that a well-presented, clean car can help you save over £1,000 when selling a used car, and it notes that a car that looks dirty and smells odd can make buyers suspicious about how it has been maintained. It can be. Government guidance on pollution prevention lists vehicle washing among activities that produce contaminated water, and points out that surface water drains discharge directly to the environment without treatment. The AA makes the same point about home washing: soapy runoff can reach drains or waterways. • Busy households. Parents and shift workers who would otherwise never get to it.
• Dog owners. Hair removal is slow, tiring work that professional rubber tools and vacuums handle far better.
• Sellers and lease returners. Presentation affects offers and inspection outcomes.
• People without a driveway or outside tap. Washing a car properly in a flat or terrace without either is difficult.
• Owners who want the paint kept right. Careful washing technique reduces the swirls that cheap brushes leave.

When is it not worth paying for?

Be honest about your situation. If you enjoy it, have the time, own decent microfibre mitts, two buckets and proper car shampoo, and keep the car tidy, you may only need a professional visit a few times a year for the jobs you cannot easily do, such as deep interior work.
