Bird droppings are acidic and will etch into a car's clear coat if left, leaving a dull, often permanent mark, and heat speeds the damage right up. The key is to remove them quickly and gently: soften the dropping, lift it away with a soft cloth, and never scrub it off dry, which grinds grit into the paint. Keeping a layer of wax on gives the paint a barrier that buys you time. Here is how to deal with them safely.
Why bird droppings damage paint
Bird droppings are acidic, and as they dry they react with and etch into the clear coat, leaving an outline or dull patch that can be permanent. Warm weather makes it far worse, as the heat accelerates the reaction and can bake the dropping on within hours. This is why a dropping left on a hot day does more damage than one in cool, damp weather.
Act fast, but gently
The sooner you remove a dropping the less chance it has to etch, so deal with them as soon as you notice. But do not just wipe a dry, hardened dropping off, that drags grit across the paint and adds scratches. Soften it first, then lift it away gently. Speed and gentleness together are what protect the paint.
The safe removal method
Dampen the dropping to soften it, ideally with a dedicated quick-detailer or a damp microfibre laid over it for a minute or two. Once softened, lift it away gently with the cloth, folding to a clean section as you go. For a stubborn, baked-on dropping, repeat the soaking rather than forcing it. Afterwards, check the spot for any etching that may need attention.
Keep wax on as a barrier
A layer of wax or sealant sits between the dropping and the clear coat, slowing how quickly the acid reaches the paint and buying you time to remove it. It also makes droppings easier to wipe off. Keeping protection topped up, as covered in our paint protection guide, is one of the best defences against this kind of damage.
Repairing etched paint
If a dropping has already left a dull, etched mark, washing will not remove it, that needs light paint correction to level the clear coat, followed by fresh protection. We assess and correct etched and marked paintwork, then protect it, across Derby and the East Midlands.
