No, you do not need a driveway. A mobile valet can be done wherever the car is legally and safely parked with enough room around it to open every door fully. That includes a space on your street, a residents' bay, a flat's allocated parking or a workplace car park. We bring our own water and power, so there is no need for an outside tap or a socket. The things that do matter are space, safety and permission, and this guide explains each so you know whether your spot will work before you book.
What kind of space does a mobile valet need?
- A legal parking place. Somewhere the car can stay for the length of the job, which for a full valet is around 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
- Door space. The interior is cleaned with the doors open, so there needs to be room to swing each one fully, especially on the driver's side for on-street parking.
- Room to walk round. Enough space to wash and dry every panel safely, including the side nearest the kerb.
- A place for the van nearby. We park close to the car so hoses and cables are short and do not cross busy footpaths.
Can you valet a car parked on the street?
Yes, and it is common in terraced streets and areas with flats. The car needs to be parked legally in the first place. The Highway Code says you must not park partially or wholly on the pavement in London or Scotland, and that elsewhere you should not do so unless signs permit it. It also says not to stop or park in front of an entrance to a property or where the kerb has been lowered to help wheelchair and mobility scooter users. If your usual space breaks one of these rules, please move the car to a legal space before we arrive.
On a narrow street, a little room on the road side of the car makes a big difference, because that is where the driver's door opens.
What about residents' bays, flats and work car parks?
Residents' bays. Fine, provided your car is entitled to be there. Rule 241 of the Highway Code says not to park in spaces reserved for specific users, such as residents, unless entitled to. Our van will park nearby legally.
Flats and private car parks. Check whether the management company or lease allows cleaning in the car park. Most are happy if the work is tidy and nothing is left behind.
Workplaces. Ask facilities or the site manager first. Valeting during the working day is popular because the car is not needed until home time.
Where is valeting not possible?
- Pay and display bays where the time limit is shorter than the job.
- Multi-storey or underground car parks that ban cleaning or do not have room for a van nearby.
- Spaces on a busy main road with fast traffic passing close to the driver's door.
- Steep slopes where water and products run off quickly, or a space next to a road gully on a slope where washwater would go straight into the drain.
If your space is borderline, send a photo or the street name and we will say honestly whether it works.
How is runoff handled when there is no drive?
Government guidance on pollution prevention says surface water drains discharge directly to the environment, and lists vehicle washing as an activity that produces contaminated water. That matters most on the street, where gullies lead to local watercourses. We use measured amounts of water and product rather than leaving a hose running, choose suitable products, and keep heavy rinsing to a minimum. How can you make an on-street valet go smoothly?
- Park legally with space on the driver's side and behind the car if you can.
- Empty personal items, child seats and anything in the boot you want kept.
- Tell us about parking restrictions, permit zones or awkward access when you book.
- Arrange how we get the keys if you will not be in.
