Full Valet vs Mini Valet: Which Do You Need?

Book a mini valet when the car is broadly clean and you want it kept that way. Book a full valet when the car has gone past a quick tidy: crumbs in the seat rails, marked door cards, dull paint, dusty vents, or smeary glass on the inside. The mini valet maintains; the full valet resets. If you are unsure, the honest test is to sit in the driver's seat and look around. If you notice dirt without searching for it, the car needs a full valet. The rest of this guide gives you quicker ways to decide.

What is the practical difference between the two?

The names vary between businesses, so always ask what is included. As a rule:

• A mini valet is a lighter clean: an exterior wash, wheels, a quick vacuum of the main floor areas and a wipe of the obvious surfaces and glass. It is designed to be quick and frequent.
• A full valet works through every part of the car. Ours includes a deep vacuum of carpets, seats and boot, the dashboard, door cards, console and vents, glass inside and out, a two-bucket hand wash, wheels and tyres, and a carnauba wax. Our full valet checklist lists every step.

The full valet takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A mini valet is shorter because it skips the detailed work.

Five checks to decide which one to book

1. Run a hand under the seat rails and down the side of the seats. Crumbs, grit or hair mean a full valet.
2. Look at the inside of the windscreen at a low sun. A grey film or smears need a proper glass clean, which a full valet covers.
3. Check the door pockets, cup holders and vents. Sticky residue and dust need detailed work.
4. Look at the paint after it rains. If water sits flat rather than beading, the wax has worn off and a full valet with wax is due.
5. Ask when it last had a full clean. If it was more than a few months ago, start with a full valet and maintain from there.

How does the way you use the car change the answer?

• Solo commuters who rarely carry passengers can usually keep the inside tidy with occasional mini valets and book a full valet each season.
• Families with young children usually need full valets more often, because food, drink and mud reach places a quick vacuum misses.
• Dog owners need the full valet for hair removal; a quick vacuum leaves most of it behind in the carpet.
• High-mileage drivers collect traffic film and brake dust faster, so the exterior benefits from frequent washes even if the inside stays tidy.

Is the glass reason enough to book a full valet?

It can be. The Highway Code says windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision, and that lights, indicators, reflectors and number plates must be kept clean and clear. The inside of the windscreen collects a film from vinyl and plastics, plus fingerprints and breath, and it shows badly when the sun is low or headlights come towards you in the dark. A mini valet may only wipe the glass quickly. A full valet cleans every pane inside and out to a streak-free finish.

When does neither option cover the problem?

Some problems need a specific treatment rather than more cleaning time. A musty smell or visible spots on fabric suggest damp or mould, which needs dedicated mould removal from £80. Ground-in stains, spills on fabric and lingering odours often respond better to steam cleaning, from £60. Dull, swirled paint is a job for detailing, from £150.
