The secret to streak-free car windows is simple: a clean glass microfibre cloth, a proper glass cleaner, and working out of direct sunlight so nothing dries before you buff it. Most streaks come from a dirty cloth, too much product, or cleaning hot glass in the sun. Get those three things right and your glass will be crystal clear inside and out, with no smears blurring your view.
Why your windows streak
Streaks usually come down to three things. A dirty or fabric-softener-treated cloth leaves residue. Too much product cannot be fully buffed away. And cleaning glass in direct sun makes the cleaner flash-dry before you can wipe it clear. The hazy film on the inside of a windscreen, made of off-gassing from plastics and trim, makes all of this worse.
Use the right cloth and product
Use clean microfibre cloths kept just for glass, never paper towels or old rags that shed lint, and avoid washing them with fabric softener, which leaves a film. Choose an automotive glass cleaner, or warm water for general dust. Keep two cloths to hand: one slightly damp with cleaner, and one clean and dry for the final buff.
The streak-free technique
Work in the shade on cool glass. Spray the cleaner onto the cloth rather than the glass to control the amount, wipe across the pane to lift the dirt, then immediately buff dry with the second cloth before it can dry on its own. A final wipe in straight lines, horizontal one side and vertical the other, lets you spot exactly where any remaining streak is.
Don't forget the inside
The inside of the windscreen is the streakiest spot because film builds up there over time, yet it is awkward to reach over the dashboard. Do it last, fold the cloth to get into the base of the screen, and clean the rear-view mirror too. If the film is heavy, a first pass to cut it and a second to polish gives the clearest result.
