How to Clean Car Windows Without Streaks

To clean car windows without streaks, work in the shade on cool glass, spray an ammonia-free glass cleaner onto a clean microfibre rather than the glass, wipe the window, then immediately buff it dry with a second, completely dry microfibre. Wipe the outside with vertical strokes and the inside with horizontal ones, so any streak tells you which side it is on. Most streaks come from too much product, dirty cloths or cleaner drying in the sun, not from the glass itself, so fixing those three things solves nearly every smeary window.

Why do car windows streak?

A streak is residue left behind on the glass. The usual causes are:

• Too much product. More cleaner than the cloth can lift leaves a film.
• Dirty or contaminated cloths. A towel that has picked up wax, dressing or fabric softener spreads it across the glass.
• Sun and heat. Cleaner evaporates before you can wipe it off, leaving its ingredients behind.
• The interior film. Inside the car, a greasy layer builds up from plastics, skin oils and breath. It smears rather than wipes off unless you work it properly.
• Hard water. Tap water left to dry on glass leaves mineral spots.

Which cloths and products work best on car glass?

Cloths: waffle-weave or tight-weave glass microfibres are the best tool. Keep a set just for glass. Wash them separately from other microfibres, without fabric softener, and air dry them, because softener coats the fibres and causes smearing.

Cleaner: choose a dedicated automotive glass cleaner that is ammonia-free. Ammonia can harm window tint films and some interior plastics and rubbers. Household glass sprays often contain it.

Avoid: newspaper, paper kitchen towel (it leaves lint), and interior dressing sprays near the glass, as overspray creates a haze that is hard to remove.

What is the streak-free two-towel method?

1. Work in the shade on cool glass, never in direct sun.
2. Clean the outside first if the car is dirty, so grit does not end up on the inside of the door when you open it.
3. Fold your first microfibre into quarters and mist it lightly with cleaner. Spraying the cloth, not the glass, keeps product off seals and the dashboard.
4. Wipe in straight lines, overlapping each pass. Outside, go top to bottom; inside, go side to side.
5. Buff immediately with a second, completely dry microfibre until the glass squeaks.
6. Turn the cloths to a fresh face as each one loads up.
7. Check from different angles, including from the driving seat, before moving on.

Wind each side window down a few centimetres to clean the top edge that hides in the seal, then wind it back up and finish the rest.

How do you clean the inside of the windscreen properly?

It is the hardest window on the car because of its angle and the dashboard in the way. Some tips:

• Sit in the passenger seat to clean the driver's half, and the driver's seat for the passenger half; your arm reaches the corners better.
• Use a windscreen tool with a microfibre pad, or wrap the cloth around the back of your hand and use your palm flat against the glass.
• Expect two passes on a neglected screen: the first lifts the greasy film, the second leaves it clear.
• Do the rear-view mirror, sensor area and the corners at the base where film collects.

Why does clean glass matter for driving?

The Highway Code states that windscreens and windows must be kept clean and free from obstructions to vision. A smeared screen scatters light from low winter sun and oncoming headlights, which causes glare that can briefly blind you. Wiper blades also matter: replace them when they start to judder or leave arcs, and top up the screen wash with a proper additive in winter.
