Beating it long term means reducing the moisture in the cabin and keeping the glass clean, because grime gives the condensation something to cling to.
Why windows mist up
Misting happens when humid air inside the car hits the cold glass and the moisture condenses into a fine film. The more moisture in the cabin, from breath, wet clothes, damp mats or a leak, the worse it gets. Cold mornings are the prime time because the glass is coldest and we get in with damp coats and umbrellas.
Clear it fast
To demist quickly, use everything at once.
- Turn the heater up and direct it at the windscreen.
- Switch on the air-con, which dries the air as it warms.
- Crack a window briefly to let humid air escape.
- Use the rear demister for the back screen.
Air-con plus heat is the fastest combination, as it both warms and dries the air.
Reduce moisture in the cabin
Less moisture means less misting. Take wet umbrellas and gym kit out rather than leaving them in the car, shake off and dry the floor mats, and check for any leaks letting water in. Rubber mats that trap water and damp carpet underlay are common hidden sources. A car that is dry inside fogs up far less in the first place.
Clean glass mists up less
A greasy, filmy film on the inside of the glass, from off-gassing plastics and general grime, gives condensation more to cling to and makes misting worse. Cleaning the inside of the windscreen and windows properly, with a glass cleaner and microfibre, leaves a clear surface that fogs up less and clears faster. An anti-fog treatment on clean glass helps further.
