How to Remove Mould From a Convertible Roof

To remove mould from a convertible roof, brush the hood dry, wet it, apply a soft top cleaner designed to tackle mould and algae, work it in gently with a soft brush, leave it to dwell, then rinse thoroughly and let the roof dry completely before reproofing. Do not use bleach or a pressure washer. Light green algae usually lifts in one or two washes. Black spots that have rooted into fabric are harder and may fade rather than vanish. The step most people miss is checking inside the folds and the headlining, where damp hides.

Why do soft tops grow mould and algae?

A fabric hood is a large, textured surface that sits outdoors, catches tree debris and stays damp for hours after rain. Dirt and organic matter trapped in the weave feed the growth, and shaded parking under trees adds pollen, sap and drips. Green algae tends to appear on the rear and lower sections that stay wettest. Black mould spots are common near seams, along the rear window and wherever the roof creases.

Folding is the big risk. Mazda's MX-5 owner's manual warns that if the top dries while folded, it will deteriorate and grow mould. A roof lowered damp on a sunny afternoon after a morning shower can spend days folded in a dark, humid space.

How do you treat mould and algae on the outside of the hood?

1. Dry brush with a soft upholstery brush to remove loose debris, in straight lines along the weave.
2. Wet the roof with a gentle hose flow, not a pressure washer jet.
3. Apply a soft top cleaner made for your hood material, ideally one formulated for mould and algae, and test it on a hidden area first for colour loss.
4. Agitate gently with a soft brush in one direction. Spend more time on stained areas, but do not scrub hard enough to fluff the fibres.
5. Let it dwell for the time on the label, keeping the surface wet.
6. Rinse thoroughly until no foam remains, working from the top down.
7. Repeat on stubborn patches once rather than scrubbing harder.
8. Dry fully with the roof up before anything else goes on.

Wear gloves and work outdoors. Mould can aggravate allergies and asthma; see a GP for symptoms. UK government guidance lists people with existing lung conditions among those at higher risk from mould, so they are better off leaving this job to someone else.

Why should you never use bleach on a convertible roof?

Bleach is the most common reach for black spots, and it often does more harm than good. Mazda's maintenance guidance specifically warns against wiping the top with chlorine bleach, alcohol or organic solvents, because they can cause discolouration or staining. Bleach can leave pale blotches on dark fabric, weaken stitching and strip the water-repellent proofing, which makes the roof absorb more water and grow mould faster next time.

The same guidance says automatic and high-pressure car washes are harmful to a convertible top. A pressure washer used up close can lift seams and drive water through the membrane.

What about mould inside the folds and on the headlining?

Many hoods have an inner lining that you only see from inside the car. If the outside has been mouldy, or the roof was folded wet, raise the roof and check:

• the underside of the hood where it folds, using a torch;
• the headlining fabric for grey or black specks;
• the hood storage area and the boot for damp.

Inner linings are usually lighter and more delicate, and they cannot be rinsed. Light marks can be lifted with a barely damp cloth and an interior-safe cleaner, then dried with the doors open. How do you stop the mould coming back?

• Reproof once the roof is clean and completely dry, so water beads off rather than soaking in.
• Never lower the roof wet. If you must, raise it again as soon as possible and let it dry fully.
• Brush off leaves and droppings promptly, especially in autumn.
• Clear the hood drains, which Mazda advises cleaning at least once a year, so water does not sit around the frame.
• Avoid parking under trees for long periods where you can.
