Why soft tops grow mould and algae
A convertible hood is porous fabric or vinyl exposed to the weather, so it holds moisture, especially when parked outside, under trees, or unused over a damp winter. That damp is the perfect home for green algae and mould, which take hold quickly. It is one of the most common soft top problems, and it gets worse the longer it is left.
Clean it the right way
Brush off loose debris first, then clean the hood with a product made specifically for soft tops, worked in gently along the weave with a soft brush. Never use car shampoo, household cleaners or bleach, which damage the fabric and strip its proofing. Rinse thoroughly so no product is left behind, and let it dry fully.
Treat the mould and algae
For the green algae and mould spots, a dedicated soft top mould and algae treatment lifts the growth without bleaching the colour out of the fabric. Treat it as early as you can, because the longer it sits, the more it stains and the more it weakens the material. Preventing future growth
Keep the hood as dry as possible, avoid leaving the car under trees, and treat and reproof once or twice a year.
