Why Does My Car Smell Musty?

What a musty smell really means

That damp, musty odour is the smell of mould and bacteria growing on trapped moisture. It is your car telling you water is sitting somewhere it should not. Because the cause is hidden, masking the smell never lasts, the mould keeps growing and producing odour. Finding the moisture is the only real fix.

The common causes

The usual culprits are:

• Leaking seals around doors, windows or the windscreen, letting rain seep in.
• Blocked drains in the sunroof, scuttle or pollen filter housing, channelling water inside.
• Wet footwells from leaks, spills or wet shoes that never fully dried.
• A little-used car sitting in damp conditions, building condensation.

Finding the moisture

Lift the mats and press on the carpets to feel for damp, and check the boot and spare wheel well, where water collects unseen. If you find damp, dry it thoroughly with a dehumidifier or heat. A blocked drain is often a quick fix that solves the whole problem. If you cannot find the source, it is worth having it diagnosed before it spreads.

Removing the smell for good

Once the car is dry and the leak addressed, the smell-causing mould and residue in the fabric must be removed, not just covered. High-temperature steam cleaning sanitises the seats, carpets and headliner and kills the mould responsible. Where there is visible mould, a dedicated treatment is the right call.
