A damp, musty smell in a car almost always means trapped moisture or hidden mould, not just stale air. Masking it with an air freshener never works for long. To fix it properly you need to dry the car out, find where the water is getting in, deep-clean the affected fabric, and sanitise the interior. Done in that order, the smell goes for good.
What causes a musty smell in a car?
The cause is moisture sitting somewhere it should not. Common culprits are wet footwells from a leaking door or window seal, a blocked sunroof or pollen filter drain channeling water inside, damp clothing or umbrellas left in the car, or condensation in a vehicle that is rarely used. Once that moisture lingers, mould and bacteria grow and produce the musty smell.
Find and dry the moisture
Press on the carpets and lift the mats to feel for damp, and check the boot and spare wheel well, where water often collects unseen. Dry everything thoroughly with a dehumidifier, the heater and air conditioning, or a warm dry day with the windows open. If the carpet underlay is soaked, it may need lifting and drying, which is a bigger job.
Track down the source
Drying alone is not enough if water keeps getting in. Look for perished door or window seals, blocked drainage channels around the sunroof and windscreen, or a leaking pollen filter housing. Clearing a blocked drain is often a five-minute fix that solves the whole problem. If you cannot find the source, it is worth getting it diagnosed before it spreads.
Deep-clean and sanitise
Once the car is dry and the leak is fixed, the smell-causing residue in the fabric needs removing. A surface wipe will not reach it. High-temperature steam cleaning penetrates the seats, carpets and headliner, kills the bacteria and mould responsible, and lifts the odour at source. If there is visible mould, a dedicated mould removal treatment is the right call.
