Steam is one of the most water-efficient ways to clean a car interior. A professional steam machine works from a small reservoir, because the water leaves the nozzle as vapour and only a little condenses on the surface, compared with the steady flow of a garden hose. It also relies on heat rather than strong detergent to loosen grime, so there is far less chemical to rinse away. Steam does not replace washing the paintwork, but used for the interior and detail areas it cuts both water and chemical use noticeably.
Why does steam use so little water?
A hose delivers water as a continuous stream, most of which runs off the car and down the drive within seconds. A steam cleaner turns a small volume of water into vapour, and vapour takes up far more space than the liquid it came from. That is why a reservoir of a few litres can steam an entire cabin, including seats, carpets and vents.
The low moisture has a second benefit. Seats and carpets are damp rather than wet afterwards, so they dry quickly without the heater running for hours and without the risk of a musty smell developing in soaked foam.
Is cutting chemicals as important as saving water?
Often more so. Water that runs off a driveway usually goes into a surface water drain, and in most areas those drains lead to local streams and rivers, not to a treatment works. NetRegs, the environmental guidance service for businesses, states that vehicle washing run-off must not be allowed to enter surface water drains, surface waters or ground waters, and recommends biodegradable, phosphate-free products where detergents are used.
Steam helps because heat does much of the work strong cleaners would otherwise do. Dried drinks, grease on door cards and grime in seat rails soften with temperature alone, so a valeter can use mild, diluted products or none at all on many surfaces.
Where does steam not help the environment?
- Paintwork. Steam is not a substitute for a wash on the main bodywork, because grit has to be lubricated and rinsed off, not wiped. That part still needs water.
- Energy. The boiler uses electricity to heat the water. Against the volume of water saved, that trade is usually favourable, but it is not zero.
- Heavily soiled carpets. Very dirty fabric may still need extraction with a cleaning solution after steaming.
For the exterior, the greenest options are a two bucket wash with a measured rinse, or a rinseless or waterless method on a car that is only lightly dirty. Our comparison of waterless and traditional washing explains when each is safe for the paint.
How can I wash my car at home with less impact?
- Use buckets, not a running hose. Fill two buckets and use a hose or pressure washer only for short rinses.
- Wash on grass or gravel where possible, so water soaks into the ground rather than going straight into a road drain.
- Choose a pH-neutral, biodegradable shampoo and measure it; more product does not mean a cleaner car.
- Skip the degreaser unless it is genuinely needed, and never tip leftover buckets of dirty water down a road drain.
- Clean little and often. A car that is washed regularly needs less water and less chemical each time than one caked in months of road film.
Can I clean my car during a hosepipe ban?
Temporary use bans issued by water companies usually list cleaning a private motor vehicle with a hosepipe as a banned activity. You can still use a bucket. Some suppliers exempt businesses washing private cars as a service to customers; Essex and Suffolk Water's notice, for example, lists that exemption. Each company writes its own notice, so check yours before booking anything. In Derbyshire and much of Nottinghamshire, that is usually Severn Trent.
Interior steam cleaning is barely affected by a ban, since it uses so little water to begin with.
