A soft top that has gone patchy green along the rear edge, or soaks up water instead of beading it, has usually lost its protection. Restoring that is a two-stage job. Canvas or mohair-style fabric gets a hand scrub, time to dry out completely, and then a fresh coat of proofer so showers bead and roll away. Vinyl is different: it is cleaned and then sealed against sunlight with a UV protectant, since there is nothing to waterproof in a plastic skin. Looking after a hood between treatments
Sweep fallen leaves off the canvas with a soft-bristled brush instead of letting them rot in place, particularly from October onwards. After a heavy downpour, look at the drain channels around the base of the hood; if they clog, water ends up in the footwells. Automatic brush washes and fabric roofs do not mix. A plastic rear window marks very easily, so it only ever gets a soft cloth and a cleaner made for it.
The sweet spots for booking are late spring and early autumn. Reproof in May and the hood heads into summer freshly protected; do it in September and it is ready for the wet season, when Wilford's humidity climbs back above 80%. Steer clear of the days right after a long rainy spell, because the fabric has to be bone dry before any proofer touches it.

Convertible Top Treatment in Wilford: Questions
Not usually. We need a legal, safe space with room to work round the car, and we bring our own water and power, so no tap or socket is needed. Parking clear of trees helps, especially in autumn, as wet leaves stick to fresh proofer. The car then needs to stay where it is with the roof up until the proofer has cured, so pick a spot you will not need to leave that day.
Yes. A plastic rear screen is cleaned by hand with a soft cloth and a cleaner made for it, never anything abrasive, because it scratches easily. A glass screen is cleaned like any other window. If the plastic has already gone cloudy or cracked, cleaning will not restore it, and we say so before starting. On Wilford's 30 or so frost nights a year, let the heater clear it rather than scraping.
Usually, as long as the fabric is still sound. Patchiness often comes from dirt, algae and proofing that has worn away in some places but not others, so a deep clean followed by an even reproof can make a real difference. What cleaning cannot do is replace dye lost to the sun or mend fabric that has thinned or torn. We look at it first and tell you honestly what result to expect.
