How to Dry Your Car Without Scratches

Dry a car safely with a large, plush microfibre or dedicated drying towel, patting and dragging gently. How you dry matters as much as how you wash, because the wrong towel or a rough technique drags leftover grit across the paint and adds swirls. Letting the car air-dry is no better, as it leaves mineral water spots etched on the surface.

Why you should not let it air-dry

Leaving a car to air-dry seems easy, but the water contains minerals that stay behind as it evaporates, leaving spots and rings on the paint and glass. In hard-water areas these can be stubborn and even etch into the surface in the sun. Drying the car properly straight after rinsing avoids the problem entirely.

Choose the right towel

The towel makes all the difference.

• Use a large, plush microfibre drying towel or a quality waffle-weave towel.
• Avoid old bath towels and anything rough, which can scratch.
• Keep drying towels clean and separate from wheel and general cloths.
• Have more than one ready, as a soaked towel just pushes water around.

The safe drying technique

Be gentle. Lay the towel flat on a panel and pat or gently drag it rather than scrubbing back and forth. Work top to bottom, doing the dirtier lower panels last. If you hear or feel any grit, stop and rinse the area, because dragging grit is what causes swirls. The aim is to lift water off, not to rub the paint.

Use a drying aid

A drying aid or quick detailer sprayed on as you go helps the towel glide, reduces friction and leaves a little protection and gloss behind. On a car with wax or a coating, water sheets off far more easily, making drying quicker and safer. A leaf blower or car dryer is another option to push water out of mirrors, grilles and badges without touching them.
