To dry a car without scratches, start with a thorough final rinse, then lay a large, clean microfibre drying towel flat on each panel and pat or slowly glide it off without pressing down. Work from the roof downwards, swap to a second towel when the first gets damp, and blow water out of mirrors and gaps. Do it in the shade and do it promptly, because drying slowly in the sun leaves mineral spots. The aim is to lift water away while touching the paint as little and as lightly as possible.
Why does drying cause so many scratches?
By the time you dry, the car looks clean, so it is tempting to rub hard. But any grit the wash missed is now trapped between towel and paint. Old bath towels, chamois leathers that have gone stiff, and water blades all press that grit into the surface. Nissan's owner's manual advises avoiding tight-napped or rough cloths on paint, and the RAC says soft microfibre drying cloths are preferable to a chamois leather or water blade because there is less chance of damaging your paintwork.
Swirls from drying build up gradually. You will not see one wash's worth, but after a year of rubbing they show as a web of fine marks in sunlight.
Which towels should you use?
- Twisted loop or plush microfibre drying towels hold a lot of water and have deep fibres that trap any stray particles away from the paint.
- Size matters. A large towel covers a whole bonnet and means fewer passes.
- Keep separate towels for paint, glass, door shuts and wheels. Never use a wheel towel on paint.
- Wash them properly on their own, with a little non-biological detergent and no fabric softener, which clogs the fibres. Tumble dry on low or air dry.

What is the safest drying method?
- Final rinse with a gentle flow of water without a spray head. The water sheets off and leaves less behind, especially on protected paint.
- Start with the glass and roof, then the bonnet, boot and upper sides.
- Lay the towel flat, pat it, and lift it off. Or hold two corners and drag it slowly towards you with only its own weight.
- Turn or swap the towel as soon as it stops absorbing well.
- Finish the lower panels last, as they are most likely to hold leftover grit.
- Clear the drips from mirrors, lights, badges, fuel flap and door shuts with a smaller towel or a blower.
A spray of quick detailer or drying aid onto the wet panel adds lubrication, so the towel glides more easily and leaves a little protection behind.
How do you avoid water spots?
Tap water contains dissolved minerals. Mazda's owner care guidance notes that rain, dew and tap water can contain harmful minerals such as salt and lime, and advises washing and waxing promptly if water marks appear. Once the water evaporates, those minerals stay on the surface as spots, and in hard water areas they can etch the lacquer if left in the sun.
- Wash in shade and dry immediately, panel by panel on a warm day.
- Nissan also warns against washing in direct sunlight or while the body is hot.
- A filtered or deionised final rinse helps if you wash at home often.
- Remove fresh spots with a quick detailer; older etched spots need polishing.
Is a car dryer or leaf blower worth it?
Blowing water off is the only method that does not touch the paint at all. A dedicated car dryer blows filtered warm air; a cordless leaf blower works too, as long as it is clean and you keep it away from gravel and dust. Blowers are especially useful for grilles, wheels, mirror housings and badges, where water hides and runs out later. Many people blow out the gaps and then towel the flat panels.
