Sand comes out of a car when you loosen it from the fabric first, then vacuum thoroughly into every crevice. Beach sand is fine and works its way into carpet fibres, seat seams and runners, which is why it keeps reappearing days after a trip. A quick once-over never gets it all, so the trick is to agitate the fabric and be methodical about the hidden gaps.
Why sand keeps reappearing
Sand is light and fine, so it sinks deep into carpet pile and lodges in seat seams, seatbelt slots and seat runners. A normal vacuum pass lifts the surface grains but leaves the embedded ones, which then work their way back out as you drive. To get rid of it you have to bring the buried sand to the surface first.
Loosen it before you vacuum
A little agitation makes a huge difference.
- Rub the carpet and fabric seats firmly with a stiff brush or a rubber glove to lift embedded grains.
- Pat the seats and knock the mats out of the car upside down.
- Slide the seats fully forward and back to expose the runners.
This brings the hidden sand up where the vacuum can actually reach it.
Vacuum into every gap
Use a crevice tool and work slowly. Sand hides in the gaps between seat cushions, along the door sills, around the seat rails and in the boot edges. Go over each area more than once, and do not forget the seatbelt slots and under the pedals. A slow, deliberate pass lifts far more than a quick sweep.
Lift the last fine grains
Even a good vacuum leaves a film of the finest sand. A slightly damp microfibre cloth wiped over hard surfaces and a soft detailing brush flicked through vents and stitching picks up what is left. For mats, a wash and full dry outside the car finishes the job. After a really sandy summer, a deep clean clears it all in one go.
