Removing melted chocolate
Melted chocolate should be hardened before you touch it, exactly like chewing gum. Press an ice cube in a small bag against it until it is solid, then lift the brittle pieces off with a blunt plastic scraper. Trying to wipe soft chocolate just grinds it into the weave and spreads the greasy stain wider, so always chill it first.
Treating the chocolate stain
Once the lumps are gone, there is usually a greasy brown mark left behind.
- Mix a little washing-up liquid with cool water and dab it onto the mark.
- Blot from the outside in with a clean cloth, lifting the colour gradually.
- Rinse the cloth often and repeat rather than soaking the seat.
- Let it dry, then vacuum to lift the fibres back up.
The grease in chocolate is what makes it stubborn, so a degreasing dish soap works better than plain water.
Cleaning up ice cream and dairy
Ice cream is mostly milk, so the priority is speed. Blot up as much as you can, then clean the area with cool water and a little mild detergent. Never use hot water on dairy, because heat can cook the proteins and set the stain. The real risk with ice cream is the smell, as milk left in warm fabric quickly turns sour, so clean it thoroughly the same day.
