A car wash subscription and a professional valet do different jobs. A subscription buys repeat exterior washes, usually at one automatic site or chain, for a monthly fee. It suits drivers who want the outside rinsed often and pass the site regularly. A professional valet cleans the car inside and out by hand, dries it properly and finishes the paint with protection, but you pay per visit. For many households the best value is a mix: a valet every so often, with quick washes in between if they suit your routine.
What does a car wash subscription usually include?
Plans vary, but most share a pattern:
- A monthly fee for a set number of washes, or unlimited washes, at one site or a chain of sites.
- Exterior washes through an automatic machine, sometimes with tiers adding wheel cleaning, underbody spray or a spray wax.
- Payment taken automatically from a card each month, often managed through an app.
- Little or no interior work. Some include access to vacuums you use yourself.
They are designed around convenience on your existing route. If the site is on your commute or next to your supermarket, a quick wash costs you little extra time.
What does a professional valet include?
A valet covers the jobs a machine cannot:
- A hand wash with a pre-wash and clean mitts, which is gentler on paint than brushes.
- Wheels, tyres and arches cleaned with dedicated kit.
- Hand drying, including door shuts and glass edges.
- A full interior clean: vacuuming, seats, carpets, dashboard, vents, door cards and glass.
- A wax or sealant finish that helps the paint stay clean for longer.
The AA notes that hand washing usually beats machines, and that wiping the car down by hand rather than relying on blow dryers reduces water marks and reaches cracks a machine misses. A mobile car valet also comes to your home or workplace, so you do not need to drive anywhere.
How do you compare the real cost?
The headline monthly price is only half the picture. To compare fairly:
- Count realistic visits. Look back at how often you actually washed the car over the last few months, not how often you would like to.
- Divide the monthly fee by those visits to get a true cost per wash.
- Compare like with like. An automatic exterior wash is not the same job as a hand wash, and neither is a full valet.
- Add the interior. If you would still need to pay for interior cleaning, include that.

Which option suits which kind of driver?
A subscription can suit you if you drive a lot of miles, pass the site several times a week, mainly care about the outside, and are relaxed about the small risk of fine marks from machine washes.
A professional valet suits you if the interior matters as much as the outside, you have children, pets or a busy work car, you have dark paint that shows swirls easily, or you simply do not have time to drive to a car wash.

What should you check before signing up for a subscription?
- Minimum term. Some plans need a set number of months before you can leave.
- Renewal and price changes. Check how you will be told if the fee goes up.
- How to cancel, including any notice period.
- Which sites are included and their opening hours.
- Exclusions such as vans, roof boxes, soft tops or cars with aftermarket parts.
Many plans take payment as a recurring card payment, known as a continuous payment authority. Citizens Advice explains that you can cancel this directly with your card issuer, who cannot insist you contact the company first, up to the end of business on the day before the payment is due. It also warns that you may still owe money under the original agreement, so check the terms.
How does the season change the answer?
In winter, salt on the roads makes frequent rinsing more valuable, so a short subscription or regular jet wash visits can make sense alongside a valet. In spring, a thorough valet removes winter grime from the cabin and paint and adds fresh protection. In summer, a protected car stays cleaner for longer, so you may need fewer washes of either kind.
