A ceramic coating is a liquid paint protection product, usually based on silicon dioxide (silica) or related compounds, that is wiped onto bare, prepared paint and cures into a very thin, hard, transparent layer. Unlike wax, which sits on the surface, a coating forms a chemical bond with the clear coat. The result is a slick, glossy, strongly water repellent finish that resists dirt and weathering for much longer than traditional protection. It is a protective layer, not armour, and it does not repair anything underneath it.
What is a ceramic coating made of?
Most consumer and professional coatings contain silica or similar compounds suspended in a solvent. When applied, the solvent evaporates and the remaining material reacts with moisture in the air and with the paint surface, cross linking into a hard film. Some products use titanium dioxide or silicon carbide, and many hybrid sprays blend a small amount of silica into a polymer sealant.
Auto Express describes ceramic coatings as a chemical polymer layer above the factory paint, an alternative to waxes, with a hydrophobic layer that helps keep dirt, bird lime and stains from affecting the clear coat.
How is a ceramic coating applied?
Application is the quick part. Preparation is what takes the time:
- Thorough wash including wheels, arches and shut lines.
- Decontamination with iron fallout remover, tar remover and clay.
- Paint correction to remove swirls and defects, because the coating will lock in whatever is underneath. Our guide to paint correction explains this stage.
- Panel wipe to strip all polishing oils so the coating can bond.
- Application panel by panel with a small applicator, then levelling off the residue with microfibre at the right moment.
- Curing, during which the car must stay dry. Auto Express's tests found cure times ranging from minutes to one product that needed the car kept dry for at least four hours.
Full hardness often takes days to weeks, so most installers advise against washing with chemicals for a period afterwards.
What does a ceramic coating do?
- Repels water strongly, so rain beads and runs off, taking light dirt with it.
- Makes washing easier, because grime, insects and droppings bond less firmly.
- Resists chemicals and UV better than wax, helping to slow fading and staining.
- Adds gloss and depth, particularly on freshly polished paint.
- Lasts longer. Auto Express reports that the newer coatings are more durable than traditional wax, sometimes lasting from one to three years, while traditional waxes need topping up every few months.
What doesn't a ceramic coating do?
This is where marketing often overreaches. A coating:
- Does not stop stone chips, car park dents or keying.
- Does not make the car scratch proof. Slightly harder, yes, but dirty mitts and brush washes will still leave swirls.
- Does not mean the car never needs washing. It still needs a regular, careful wash with a pH neutral shampoo.
- Does not fully prevent water spots. Beading water can still dry into mineral spots if left in the sun.

Professional or DIY coating?
DIY kits are widely available. Auto Express put typical DIY ceramic coatings at around £50 to £100, and its test found the more demanding products took longer to apply. A DIY coating can work well if you are patient with preparation and have a dry, sheltered space. The common problems are high spots, which are streaks of residue left to cure, and coating over swirls that then cannot be polished away without removing the coating.
Professional coatings cost more because of the hours of preparation and correction, the controlled environment, and in many cases a product only sold to trained installers.
