Back in 1086 the Domesday Book wrote the name down as Lucteburne. Since then Loughborough has become a university town and a market town, set in Charnwood borough in the north of Leicestershire, a short way from the River Soar. Industry left its mark as well, with Herbert Morris starting his crane making firm at the Empress Works on Moor Lane in 1897.
