The most effective way to reduce pollen in your car is to stop it getting in, then remove what does get in without stirring it back into the air. That means keeping windows closed on high pollen days, running the ventilation through a working pollen filter, and cleaning the cabin with a HEPA vacuum and damp cloths. When is pollen season in the UK?
The Met Office describes three main waves. Tree pollen typically runs from late March to mid May. Grass pollen, the most common trigger, runs from mid May to July with peaks in early June and early July. Weed pollen can appear for much of the year, with its main period from late June through September. The NHS says hay fever symptoms are usually worse between late March and September, especially on warm, humid and windy days when counts are highest.

How do you keep pollen out of the cabin?
- Keep windows and the sunroof closed on high pollen days, particularly on rural roads and dual carriageways with long grass verges.
- Use the pollen filter. The NHS suggests using a pollen filter for car air vents if your car has one. Most modern cars have a cabin filter; check the handbook for its type and replacement interval.
- Use recirculation in heavy traffic or near cut fields, then switch back to fresh air if the windows start to mist.
- Shake off and change clothes before long drives after time outdoors, and keep outdoor jackets in the boot.
- Park away from flowering trees where you can, and close windows when parked.
How should you clean pollen out of the interior?
The aim is to capture pollen, not move it around. Dry dusting and blowing air at vents tend to lift it back into the air you breathe.
- Vacuum carpets, seats, seat seams and the boot with a vacuum fitted with a HEPA filter, as the NHS recommends for the home.
- Wipe the dashboard, door cards and console with a slightly damp microfibre cloth, folding it to a clean face often.

- Wash removable fabric items such as seat covers and dog blankets.

How do you remove pollen from paint and glass?
Pollen grains are small and slightly abrasive, and wiping a dusty car with a dry cloth or a duster drags them across the clear coat, leaving fine scratches. Pollen mixed with rain and sun can also leave stubborn marks on paint and on trim.
- Rinse the car first to float the pollen off.
- Use a pre wash foam, then a gentle contact wash with clean mitts.
- Clean glass and wiper blades so the wipers do not smear yellow streaks across the screen.
- Keep a layer of wax or sealant on the paint so pollen rinses off easily.
- Clear the scuttle panel under the windscreen, where blossom and pollen collect near the fresh air intake.
How often should you clean the car during pollen season?
For most drivers, a rinse and wash every one to two weeks keeps paint and glass clear, with a quick interior vacuum and wipe at the same time. Allergy sufferers often benefit from a deeper interior clean at the start of the season and again partway through, plus a cabin filter change if it is due.
