Preparing Your Car for an MOT

A clean car will not pass a failing MOT, but it helps the test go smoothly and avoids silly failures. Dirty or obscured number plates and lights can cause a fail, a grimy windscreen affects the visibility checks, and a cluttered boot gets in the tester's way. A clean engine bay also makes any leaks or worn parts easy to spot in advance. A little preparation, or a quick valet, sets the test off on the right foot.

Number plates and lights

Number plates must be clean and legible, and all your lights need to be clear and working. A plate caked in winter grime or a lens filmed with dirt can actually cause an MOT fail or advisory. Give the plates a wipe, clean all the light lenses front and back, and check every bulb is working before the test.

Windscreen, glass and mirrors

The MOT checks your view of the road, so clean glass matters. Clean the windscreen inside and out, including the wiper-swept area, and make sure the mirrors are clean and intact. Top up the washer fluid too, as an empty washer bottle is an MOT failure point. Clear glass and working washers tick easy boxes.

Tidy the interior and boot

The tester needs access to parts of the car, and a cluttered boot full of belongings gets in the way and can hide the spare wheel or warning triangle. Empty and tidy the boot, clear the footwells, and remove clutter from the cabin. It is a small courtesy that makes the test quicker and avoids access problems.

A clean engine bay helps

While not tested for cleanliness, a clean engine bay makes fluid leaks, perished hoses and worn components far easier to spot, both for you beforehand and the tester on the day. Cleaning it before the MOT can help you catch and fix an issue in advance rather than getting a surprise advisory or failure.

A pre-MOT valet
